How to Read a Fragrance Description

Fragrance copy is written by people whose job is to sell you the bottle. That is the job, not a complaint. But it means the text on the box operates under different rules than plain description, and knowing which words carry information is most of what separates a confident buyer from a hopeful one.

Words that mean something exact

Absolute. A specific product of solvent extraction: the plant is washed with a solvent, you get a waxy concrete, the concrete is washed with alcohol and the waxes removed. "Jasmine absolute" describes a real process with a real cost, which our guide to who makes your fragrance prices out.

Concrete. The waxy intermediate before the absolute. You will rarely see it on a box, and if you do, somebody is talking to an audience that knows things.

Extrait, or parfum. The most concentrated format a house sells.

Accord. Two or more materials combined into a single perceived smell. If a brand talks about its "amber accord," it is using the word correctly and telling you something true: amber is built, not harvested.

Soliflore. Built around one flower.

Eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum. These carry real meaning by convention. They do not carry legal meaning at all.

The concentration trap

Everyone knows the ladder: cologne, then toilette, then parfum, then extrait, each holding more aromatic material.

What almost nobody knows is that no law defines any of it. Neither the European Union nor the United States sets a rule for what an eau de parfum is, how much concentrate it must contain, or how it has to differ from an eau de toilette.

The commonly quoted ranges run roughly: cologne 2 to 5%, eau de toilette 5 to 15%, eau de parfum 10 to 20%, extrait 20 to 40%. Look at those two middle ranges. They overlap by five points. A formulation at 14% can be sold as a strong eau de toilette or a weak eau de parfum, and the choice is commercial rather than technical.

So one house's toilette can be denser than another's parfum, and comparing concentrations across brands tells you very little. Within a single fragrance's own range it is a rough guide, and even there, as our notes and accords guide shows with Sauvage, the versions are often different compositions rather than one liquid at two strengths.

Words that mean nothing

Hypoallergenic. There are no federal standards governing this term in the United States. It means whatever the company wants it to mean, and manufacturers are not required to give the FDA any evidence for the claim. The FDA tried to fix this in the 1970s by requiring a testing standard, and the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit struck the regulation down. So the word has been legally empty for fifty years and is still printed on things.

Natural. No FDA definition. A product can be labelled natural and contain synthetic preservatives, synthetic colour and synthetic fragrance.

Clean. The same problem: no definition, no standard, no verification.

And remember from our guide to who makes your fragrance that even where these terms were meaningful, they would be pointing the wrong way. Oakmoss and bergamot are natural and both are restricted for real safety reasons.

Notes of. A signal of intent that does not commit anyone to a quantity.

Infused with, essence of, inspired by, crafted with. Decoration.

Long-lasting, powerful, seductive, mysterious, iconic. Copy to ignore.

The other list on the box

The note list is marketing. The ingredient list is regulated, and it has become properly useful in 2026, so learn to read it.

Ingredients are given in INCI names, a standardised international nomenclature, rather than common or trade names.

What you will actually see, in order: Alcohol Denat. Denatured alcohol. Usually the first and largest ingredient, and it is the carrier, not a shortcut. Our myths guide handles the "alcohol-free is better" claim.

Aqua. Water.

Parfum or Fragrance. This single word stands for the entire composition, which our notes and accords guide explains is permitted because the formula is a trade secret. Dozens or hundreds of materials hide in that one word.

Then a run of chemical-sounding names at the end. This is the part people find alarming and it is the opposite of alarming. Those are the declared allergens.

The ones you will meet most: linalool, limonene, citronellol, geraniol, citral, eugenol, coumarin, benzyl benzoate, cinnamal, benzyl alcohol.

Almost all of them come from naturals: linalool is in lavender, citrus and mint, and limonene is in citrus peel. Coumarin is the hay-and-tonka molecule that started modern perfumery, covered in our history of perfume guide. Geraniol and citronellol are rose. A long allergen list frequently means more natural material, not less, which inverts what most people assume when they read it.

Two mechanical points matter here. Linalool and limonene oxidise on exposure to air, and it is the oxidised form that causes most of the sensitisation, which is another reason our storage and care guide tells you to keep the lid on and the bottle out of the light. And the declaration thresholds are 0.001% for a leave-on product like perfume and 0.01% for rinse-off, so the bar for a perfume is ten times stricter than for a shampoo, and an allergen appearing at all means it is present above ten parts per million.

Our guide to why fragrances change covers why that list got much longer in 2026: the EU more than tripled its list of declarable allergens, with the deadline for new products landing on 31 July 2026 (existing products already on the market get until 2028 to catch up). If an older box has six names at the end and a newer one of the same fragrance has twenty, nothing changed in the bottle.

What that looks like on a Canadian box specifically

Canada is doing the same thing, on its own schedule, and 2026 is the year it reached the shelf. Health Canada's amendment SOR/2024-63 phases in fragrance allergen disclosure in stages through 2026 and into 2028, and it works by requiring the allergens to be named outside the word "parfum," in the ingredient list itself, once they pass a concentration threshold, even when they arrive inside a botanical extract.

Two Canadian quirks follow from that. Ingredient names stay in INCI: a single international nomenclature, mostly Latin and chemical, so it is not translated. Everything around the list is bilingual: a Canadian box says Ingredients/Ingrédients over a list that appears only once. And parfum survives as an INCI term here as it does in Europe, so the single word still hides the formula. What is changing is the tail, not the secret.

The practical effect for a Canadian buyer is the same as the European one. Bottles of the same fragrance, bought a year apart, will carry visibly different ingredient lists. That is paperwork.

Turning a note list into an expectation

You can extract real information from a note list if you read it structurally rather than as an inventory.

Read for the family, not the items. Lavender, moss and coumarin means fougère, whatever else is listed. Bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss means chypre. Vanilla, benzoin and labdanum means amber. Our fragrance families guide tells you the shape, and the shape is what you will actually experience.

Weight the base. Base materials are what you smell for most of the wear and what other people smell on you. A list with vanilla, tonka and sandalwood at the bottom will be warm and sweet in hour four no matter how much citrus is at the top.

Count the loud materials. Oud, tuberose, patchouli, incense, ethyl maltol and iso E super all dominate whatever they are placed next to. One of them in a list usually means the fragrance is about that thing.

Distrust length. A nineteen-item list often means the copy was written to sound rich. The best fragrances are mostly two or three ideas.

Watch for identical lists. If a fragrance's published notes match a famous original exactly, that is frequently the marketing department publishing the original's pyramid rather than disclosing their own formula. It looks like proof of similarity and it is not.

What actually tells you something

The perfumer's name, when it is given. It tells you more about how a fragrance will smell than any adjective: that is the argument of our guide to the perfumers.

The launch year. It places the fragrance in a style and tells you whether what you are buying has had time to be reformulated.

The concentration and size, so you can work out cost per millilitre and compare things properly. A bigger bottle of the same fragrance is often cheaper per millilitre than a smaller one, and shops rely on people not doing that arithmetic.

Reading a listing in ninety seconds

A procedure. Do it in this order and you will not be fooled by a box.

  1. Find the family from the note list, ignoring everything else. Lavender, moss and coumarin means fougère. Bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss means chypre. Vanilla, benzoin and labdanum means amber.
  2. Read the base, not the top. The bottom third of the list is what you will wear for six hours.
  3. Count the loud materials. Oud, tuberose, patchouli, incense, ethyl maltol, Iso E Super. One of them usually means the fragrance is about that thing.
  4. Look up the perfumer and the year. Our guide to the perfumers explains why the name predicts more than the house does.
  5. Work out cost per millilitre yourself, and compare it against another size of the same thing before you compare it against anything else.
  6. Check the allergen tail if your skin reacts to things. It is the only part of the packaging that is legally obliged to be true.
  7. Then ignore all of it and test it, because our notes and accords guide covers why the description is a statement of intent, and only your own skin over a full day settles it.

Try this on three fragrances. Terre d'Hermès reads on paper as a short, plain list, and that is not a cheap fragrance being coy: our guide to the perfumers explains that Ellena works that way on purpose. Shalimar reads as a long warm list and delivers exactly that. Angel reads as a fruit salad and is actually patchouli-heavy with a mossy, chypre-adjacent base underneath its gourmand coat: the clearest case of a note list getting the general impression right and the actual materials wrong.

The words, A to Z

Every term defined in plain words. Where a term is covered properly elsewhere, we link the guide. Terms marked are ones we argue are misleading or misused, and the entry says why.

Absolute. The aromatic material left after a concrete is washed with alcohol and the waxes removed. Solvent-extracted rather than distilled. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

Accord. Two or more materials combined so they stop smelling like themselves and start smelling like a third thing. The unit perfumers actually build with. See our notes and accords guide.

Aldehydes. A class of materials, several of which smell soapy, waxy and abstract. Made famous by Chanel No. 5 in 1921. See our history of perfume guide.

† Amber. In perfumery, an accord, typically labdanum with benzoin and vanillic materials. Not the fossilised resin, which has no smell; three different things share this word. See our materials guide.

Ambergris. A substance formed in the intestine of a small proportion of sperm whales. Not vomit. Legal position varies by country and it is banned in the US and Australia. Almost always replaced today by ambroxan.

Ambroxan. A synthetic made from sclareol, from clary sage, giving a dry mineral warmth. The material behind a great deal of modern fragrance.

Anosmia. Inability to smell. Specific anosmia is blindness to one particular molecule while smelling normally otherwise, and it is common. See our guide to how smell works.

Aromachemical. Any single aroma material, natural or synthetic, used as a building block.

Attar. Traditionally, a distilled oil, often floral, historically into a sandalwood base. Used more loosely now.

Base notes. The materials that persist longest, so see pyramid before trusting the concept.

Batch code. A manufacturer's production code, usually etched on the bottle and printed on the box. Tells you when something was made, but does not prove authenticity. See our guide to batch codes and counterfeits.

Brief. The document a brand gives the fragrance suppliers describing what it wants, including a raw materials cost ceiling and a deadline. Written by marketing, not by a perfumer. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

Calone. A synthetic smelling of melon and sea air, made at Pfizer in 1966. The material behind the aquatic family. See our fragrance families guide.

Captive. A fragrance ingredient a supplier owns and will not sell to its competitors, usually protected by patent for about twenty years. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

Chypre. A family built on a bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss accord, named for Cyprus after Coty's Chypre of 1917. See our fragrance families guide.

† Clean. A marketing word with no regulatory definition, covered above.

Concrete. The waxy solid produced by solvent extraction, before it becomes an absolute. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

Coumarin. Smells of hay, almond and tonka. Synthesised by Perkin in 1868 and the material that made Fougère Royale, and the fougère family, possible. See our history of perfume guide.

Decant. Fragrance transferred from a larger bottle into a smaller one for sale or use. See our complete guide to fragrance decants.

Drydown. What a fragrance settles into after the volatile materials have gone. Where you spend most of your wearing time.

Eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait. Conventional labels for increasing concentration. No law defines any of them and the ranges overlap, covered above.

Enfleurage. An obsolete extraction method using fat to absorb scent from delicate flowers. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

Ethyl maltol. A synthetic smelling of candyfloss and caramel, patented by Pfizer in the 1960s and about six times the strength of maltol. The material behind the gourmand family. See our fragrance families guide.

Fixative. A material that slows the evaporation of others, extending a composition.

Flanker. A variation on an existing fragrance, sharing its name and much of its structure. Typically 70 to 90% similar. See our guide to the fragrance industry today.

Fougère. A family built on lavender, oakmoss and coumarin. Invented 1882. Named after ferns, which have no smell. See our fragrance families guide.

Galbanum. A resin smelling of snapped green stems, the material behind the green family.

Gourmand. A family of edible-smelling fragrances, invented by Angel in 1992. See our fragrance families guide.

Grey market. Real product, legal, sold outside a brand's authorised distribution. See our guide to buying fragrance in Canada.

Headspace. A technique for analysing the air around a living flower to identify its volatile compounds without picking it. Pioneered by Roman Kaiser at Givaudan.

Hedione. A synthetic giving brightness and transparency. First used in Eau Sauvage, 1966.

† Hypoallergenic. Legally meaningless in the United States: no standard, no required evidence, covered above.

IFRA. The International Fragrance Association. Founded 1973, based in Geneva. Sets safety standards for fragrance materials. Not a regulator: its system is voluntary and self-governing. See our guide to why fragrances change.

Indole. A compound present in white flowers such as jasmine, responsible for their slightly animal, overripe facet.

In-house perfumer. A perfumer employed by the brand whose name is on the bottle rather than by a supplier. Rare: Chanel, Hermès, Guerlain, Cartier and Louis Vuitton have one. Most houses do not. See our guide to who owns fragrance houses.

Iso E Super. A widely used synthetic giving a transparent woody radiance. Roughly 20% of people are mildly anosmic to certain isomers of it. See our guide to how smell works.

Labdanum. A resin from Mediterranean rockrose: warm, leathery, the backbone of the amber accord.

Licence. The arrangement under which a fashion or celebrity name is rented to a fragrance company, which then makes and sells the product and books the revenue. Most designer fragrance works this way. See our guide to who owns fragrance houses.

Longevity. How long a fragrance remains detectable on skin, distinct from projection and sillage. See our longevity and projection guide.

Muguet. Lily of the valley. Yields no extractable material, so it is always reconstructed.

† Natural. No regulatory definition, and no reliable relationship to safety. Oakmoss and bergamot are natural and both restricted, covered above.

Niche. Originally meaning small independent houses. Now describes a price bracket and a marketing posture more reliably than an ownership structure. See our guide to who owns fragrance houses.

Note. A smell you can name, not an ingredient.

Oakmoss. A lichen giving a damp forest-floor bitterness, structural to chypres. Restricted, not banned: two of its constituents were prohibited in the EU in 2017. See our guide to why fragrances change.

Orris. Aromatic material from aged iris rhizomes. Among the most expensive materials in perfumery, priced in the tens of thousands of dollars a kilo.

Oud. Resinous heartwood produced by Aquilaria trees in response to fungal infection. CITES Appendix II since 2004. See our materials guide.

Projection. How far a fragrance travels from you at a given moment. See our longevity and projection guide.

† Pyramid. The top, heart and base diagram. Invented by Jean Carles as a composition and teaching method, later adopted by marketing. Materials evaporate simultaneously at different rates, so it is a gradient rather than three stages. See our notes and accords guide.

Raw materials cost. Usually shortened to RMC. The ceiling a brief sets on what the perfumer may spend per kilo of concentrate. The single line that decides most of what you will smell. See our guide to what you're actually paying for.

RIFM. The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, which performs the safety assessments underlying IFRA's standards. See our guide to why fragrances change.

Sillage. The trail a fragrance leaves behind you, from the French for a boat's wake. See our longevity and projection guide.

Soliflore. A fragrance built around a single flower, covered in our fragrance families guide.

Tester. A bottle intended for retail display, usually in plain packaging. Generally the same liquid as the retail bottle, often cheaper and often old. See our guide to testing perfume.

Top notes. The most volatile materials, dominating the first minutes. Commonly said to last fifteen minutes; the real range is roughly five to thirty.

UN1266. The transport classification for perfumery products as a flammable liquid, Class 3. Governs how fragrance can legally be shipped. See our guide to buying fragrance in Canada.

Vanillin. The principal aromatic compound of vanilla. Synthesised in 1874, and today most of the world's vanilla flavour is synthetic vanillin. See our history of perfume guide.
