Perfume Myths, Interrogated

Some of these are flatly false. Several are half true, which is more interesting, and we have tried to say which part is which rather than enjoy the debunking.

About performance

"Rubbing your wrists breaks the molecules"

False as stated. Friction does not break or crush molecules, and heat is not a solvent.

What rubbing actually does is generate sudden uneven heat, which accelerates evaporation of the most volatile materials, meaning you lose part of the opening faster than you otherwise would.

So: do not rub, but not for the reason you were told. Why the myth persists: it gives a satisfying mechanical explanation for a real observation, and "you are warming it" sounds less dramatic than "you are crushing it."

"Pulse points project because the blood is warm"

Overstated. Warmer skin does push more material into the air, so pulse points are marginally better spots. The effect is small next to how much you applied and whether your skin was moisturised. See our guide to wearing fragrance.

"Vaseline makes fragrance last"

Half true, wrong mechanism. The usual claim is that petroleum jelly "locks in" the scent. What actually helps is that any occlusive or moisturised surface holds fragrance better than dry skin, which our longevity and projection guide covers. Unscented lotion does the same job and feels better.

"It lasts longer on oily skin"

True, and exaggerated. Sebum holds aromatic molecules and releases them slowly. Trade figures put oily skin at six to eight hours against two to three on dry skin. It is one factor among several, not the deciding one. See our longevity and projection guide.

"You go nose-blind but other people still smell it"

True, and the most useful thing here. Olfactory adaptation means you stop registering your own fragrance within minutes while everyone else does not. This is why people over-apply. See our guide to how smell works.

"Higher concentration always lasts longer"

Usually, not always. Concentration describes how much material is in the alcohol, not which materials. A base-heavy eau de toilette will outlast a bright eau de parfum. See our guide to reading a fragrance description and our longevity and projection guide.

"Sniffing coffee beans resets your nose"

False, and somebody actually tested it. Alexis Grosofsky at Beloit College had participants smell three fragrances repeatedly, then sniff coffee beans, lemon slices or plain air between them. No difference. The beans do not neutralise anything; they add one more smell to the pile. What helps is smelling your own skin, or time. "Spray it on your clothes, it lasts for days"

True, and it is also how you ruin a shirt. Fabric does hold fragrance far longer than skin, and natural fibres hold it longest, because wool and cotton are porous and the molecules lodge in the structure instead of evaporating off a warm surface.

The cost is a stain you will not see for days. The aromatic oils sit on the fibre, sunlight oxidises them, and what appears is a brown-yellow mark that was not there when you got dressed. Silk and satin are the worst cases and pale colours show it first.

If you are going to do it anyway, spray from eight to twelve inches, onto a lining or an inside seam, never onto silk, and never onto anything you cannot replace. See our guide to wearing fragrance.

"Spray a cloud and walk through it"

It mostly perfumes the room. A fine mist thrown into the air is going where air goes, which is not onto you, and what does land on you lands unevenly and mostly on your hair and shoulders. You have used a full dose and applied a fraction of it. Spray onto skin, close, and use fewer sprays. See our guide to wearing fragrance.

"Put it in your hair, hair holds scent"

Half true, and the half that is true costs you something. Hair does hold fragrance well. The alcohol that carries it also strips sebum from the hair shaft and works on the cuticle, and the ends, being the oldest part with the least natural oil, take the worst of it.

Once in a while is nothing. As a daily habit on dry or coloured hair it causes slow damage for no real benefit, and it is the reason alcohol-free hair mists exist as a category rather than as an upsell.

About materials

"Ambergris is whale vomit"

Wrong end. It forms in the intestine of sperm whales, in only about 1 to 5% of them, and is closer to a gallstone than to sick.

CITES excludes it as a naturally excreted waste product under Resolution Conf. 9.6, but the United States and Australia ban it anyway under their own endangered-species law. Canada's position we could not establish, and we would rather say so than invent an answer. And almost every "ambergris" note you smell is ambroxan, made from clary sage. See our materials guide.

"Musk comes from deer"

Historically yes. Now effectively never. It took the glands of about 140 killed musk deer to make one kilo of musk absolute, and CITES listed all musk deer species in 1979. Every musk you can buy is synthetic. See our materials guide.

"Natural is safer than synthetic"

False, and frequently backwards. Oakmoss is natural and contains two potent contact allergens. Bergamot is natural and phototoxic. The industry's fix for bergamot was to process the dangerous fraction out, so the safe version is the processed one. See our guide to who makes your fragrance and our materials guide.

"Oud is the most expensive material in the world"

Depends entirely on grade. Agarwood spans an enormous range, from ordinary to among the most expensive raw materials in the industry, and top-grade is squarely in that conversation. Orris butter is a serious rival, priced similarly high by weight. And a great deal of Western "oud" contains no agarwood at all. See our materials guide.

"Amber is fossilised tree resin"

Two different things sharing a word. The gemstone is fossilised resin and has no scent. Perfumery amber is an accord, built from labdanum, benzoin and vanillic materials. The name probably came from ambergris, which is a third thing again. See our materials guide.

"There is real jasmine and rose in my bargain bottle"

Almost certainly not much. One kilo of rose otto takes 3,500 to 5,000 kilos of petals. One kilo of jasmine flowers is about 8,000 blossoms. That volume of raw material is why synthetics exist, not evidence of a scandal. See our guide to who makes your fragrance and our materials guide.

About how fragrance is made

"The designer made it"

Almost never. Four companies compose most of the world's fragrance, and the brand wrote a brief and picked a winner. Fewer than 600 working perfumers exist worldwide. See our guide to who makes your fragrance.

"The published note list is what is in the bottle"

No. US labelling permits the single word "fragrance" precisely because formulas are trade secrets. Note lists are written by marketing departments. See our notes and accords guide.

"Top notes last fifteen minutes"

A rough average that hardened into a rule. Reported ranges run five to thirty minutes and depend on the fragrance and the wearer. And the underlying model is wrong anyway: everything evaporates at once at different rates, so it is a gradient rather than three acts. See our notes and accords guide.

"EDP is just EDT with more oil"

Frequently a different composition entirely. Compare the published notes for Sauvage across its concentrations: the EDP leans warmer and sweeter through the base, with more vanilla, and goes somewhere the EDT does not. "Reformulation is always cost-cutting"

One of four reasons, and often not the one. Regulation, material availability, cost, and deliberate revision all cause it. Mysore sandalwood collapsed from about 3,000 tonnes of annual supply to about 20. Vanilla prices spiked more than tenfold during a shortage. See our guide to why fragrances change.

"Oakmoss was banned"

Restricted, not banned, and the detail matters. Two constituents, atranol and chloroatranol, were prohibited in the EU in 2017. Oakmoss extract with those removed is still legal and still used. It does not smell the same: that is why the chypres changed. See our guide to why fragrances change.

"Vintage is always better"

No: some vintage bottles have oxidised into something sour, and some reformulations improved on the original. What is reliably true is that vintage is different. See our guide to why fragrances change.

About labels and claims

"Hypoallergenic means something"

It means nothing, legally. There are no federal standards for the term in the United States, and manufacturers need submit no evidence. The FDA tried to require a testing standard in the 1970s and the DC Circuit struck it down. See our guide to reading a fragrance description.

"Natural and clean are regulated terms"

They are not. No FDA definition for either. A product can be labelled natural and contain synthetic preservatives, colour and fragrance. See our guide to reading a fragrance description.

"Pheromone perfumes work"

No.

The two molecules sold as human sex pheromones are androstadienone and estratetraenol. A double-blind study led by Leigh Simmons at the University of Western Australia, published in Royal Society Open Science in 2017, tested them on 94 people across two consecutive days and found no effect on perceived gender, on attractiveness ratings, or on judgements of unfaithfulness.

The evidence beyond that one study is worse for the sellers. Tristram Wyatt at Oxford has written that no bioassay-led evidence stands up for any of the four steroid molecules routinely called human pheromones, and that the roughly sixty studies reporting significant results are best read as an example of the reproducibility crisis rather than as a body of findings.

Whether humans use chemical signals at all is a live and interesting question. Whether the bottle marketed to you on that basis contains the answer is not.

Why it persists: it sells, the claim is unfalsifiable in the moment, and a fragrance that makes you feel more confident does change how people respond to you, which the buyer then attributes to the chemistry rather than to themselves.

"Perfume expires after three years"

A regulatory convention repeated as a measurement. Houses commonly print a 30-month shelf life because a number is required, not because anything happens at month 31. Sealed and stored properly, three to five years is ordinary and a decade is common. Stored on a bathroom windowsill, two years will do real damage. "Alcohol-free is better for your skin"

Not generally. The alcohol in fragrance is there to carry and project the materials and it evaporates in seconds. Oil-based fragrances sit closer to the skin and last differently, which is a preference rather than an upgrade. About rules of thumb

These three deserve interrogation rather than a verdict, because each has a real basis and each is routinely overstated.

Seasonal rules

The basis is real. Heat pushes more material into the air, so the same fragrance is louder in July. The overstatement is treating that as a ban. An amber in summer is fine at one spray. The rule is about dose more than about category. See our fragrance wardrobe guide.

Gendered rules

The basis is commercial, not olfactory. The same suppliers, materials and often the same perfumers make both aisles. CK One made the point commercially in 1994, sold as one fragrance for both aisles at once. Smell both sides. See our fragrance wardrobe guide.

The signature scent

The basis is that recognition has value. The overstatement is that one fragrance can suit every context, which contradicts everything our guide to how smell works says about smell and memory. Three or four is enough for almost anyone. See our fragrance wardrobe guide.

The one we cannot settle for you

"It smells different on me."

Partly true and partly not, and the split is not where people think.

Your skin changes how much reaches the air and how long it stays there considerably. A 2009 study found skin-mediated chemical transformation of perfume was low on clean dry skin, so your chemistry changes what it is rather less than folklore claims. See our longevity and projection guide.

But your nose may differ from ours at the hardware level. Roughly 20% of people are mildly anosmic to certain isomers of Iso E Super, a material used in an enormous number of modern fragrances. Musks are similar. See our guide to how smell works.

So when two people disagree about a fragrance, the likeliest explanation is not the skin. It is that they are running different equipment.

A test for the next one you hear

There will be a next one. This list will be out of date and something new will be circulating by the time you read it.

1. Does it name a mechanism, and does the mechanism make sense? "Rubbing breaks the molecules" names one and it is wrong. That is usually the tell: a false claim often arrives with a more satisfying explanation than the true one, because somebody made the explanation up to fit.

2. Is there a number, and where did the number come from? "Top notes last fifteen minutes" has a number and no source. When you chase a number back and every page citing it cites another page citing it, the number has no real source.

3. Who benefits if you believe it? Pheromone marketing, "clean" labelling and "hypoallergenic" all fail this one immediately. This question is not proof of anything and it is the fastest filter on the list.

4. Can you test it yourself this week? Most performance claims you can. Spray one arm and not the other. Wear the same fragrance on two different days and note the weather.
