What vetiver actually is
Vetiver is a tall tropical grass, but the smell has nothing to do with the blades. It lives in the roots. The plant grows for a year or more, then the roots are dug up, washed, dried, and steam distilled into a thick, dark oil, one of the most useful raw materials a perfumer owns. On its own it reads earthy and rooty, somewhere between fresh soil, dry wood, green stems, and woodsmoke, and where it's grown changes the character: Haitian vetiver runs smoother and cleaner, almost grapefruit-tinged, while Java vetiver goes darker and smokier, closer to roasted nuts and leather. It works as both a top-line identity and a base note that grips the skin for hours, which is why the same raw material can anchor a bright summer citrus or a heavy winter amber.

Guerlain Vetiver: the classic reference
Guerlain Vetiver, composed by Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1959, opens on lemon, bergamot, and coriander, moves through nutmeg, pepper, jasmine, and tobacco, and settles into vetiver, cedar, and tonka bean. It's been in continuous production for over sixty years and is widely considered the benchmark other vetiver fragrances get measured against. Clean, aromatic, and versatile enough for office or evening, any season.
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP: bright and citrus-led
Grey Vetiver Eau de Parfum, the 2009 original by perfumer Harry Fremont, opens cold on grapefruit, orange blossom, and sage, moves through orris, nutmeg, and pimento, and closes on vetiver, oakmoss, and amber. Reviewers describe it as clean, citrusy, and businesslike, an "airport lounge" kind of scent, with modest 6-to-8-hour longevity.
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver Parfum: warmer, stripped down
Grey Vetiver Parfum, released in 2023, drops the fuller pyramid for three notes: orange blossom, saffron, and Haitian vetiver. Orange blossom opens warm and almost boozy, saffron adds a leathery heart, and Haitian vetiver closes it dry and smoky. Richer and more evening-oriented than the EDP, with 8-to-12-hour longevity commonly cited.
Hermès Terre d'Hermès: earthy and mineral
Terre d'Hermès, composed by Jean-Claude Ellena and launched in 2006, opens on orange and grapefruit, sharpened by pepper, geranium, and a mineral flint accord, then settles into vetiver, cedar, patchouli, and benzoin. Built vertically around wood and stone rather than sweetness, it's widely regarded as a modern classic, versatile enough for work, daytime, and just about any season.
Frédéric Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire: the rich, vetiver-forward niche take
Vetiver Extraordinaire, composed by Dominique Ropion in 2002, builds everything around Haitian vetiver as the central material: bitter orange, bergamot, and pink pepper for lift, cloves for spice, then cedar, oakmoss, myrrh, sandalwood, and musk for depth. Frédéric Malle doesn't publish a strict top-heart-base breakdown for this one, so these are the notes present rather than a staged progression. Dry, elegant, and vetiver-forward throughout, with none of the sweetness some vetiver fragrances lean on.
