The Scent
Built around a “fantasy” black orchid accord invented by Tom Ford and his perfumers rather than a real botanical extract, layered over black truffle, dark chocolate, patchouli, and incense. It reads opulent and heavy rather than fresh or clean, and wears more masculine-leaning than its feminine marketing implies, especially after the first 30-60 minutes as the gourmand-woody base takes over from the brighter citrus opening. This is a unisex-leaning fragrance in practice, whatever shelf it’s sold from, worth knowing before you buy.
Worth Knowing
Publicly credited to perfumers David Apel and Pierre Negrin. Reviewer consensus on Fragrantica and Basenotes describes it as widely worn by men, with UK Tom Ford retail staff reportedly classifying it as unisex due to purchase volume. This is the original 2006 Signature-line EDP, distinct from Black Orchid Parfum (2020) and Black Orchid Reserve (2025), and from the separate, pricier Private Blend collection.
Where It Came From
Announced in February 2006, Black Orchid was the first fragrance released under Tom Ford’s new Tom Ford Beauty partnership with the Estée Lauder Companies.
About Tom Ford
Tom Ford launched his eponymous brand in 2005 and partnered with the Estée Lauder Companies to develop fragrance and cosmetics. Black Orchid (2006) was the first release under that partnership.
