Oud in perfumery

Agarwood, the source material behind the name, forms inside Aquilaria trees after fungal infection triggers a defensive resin. The infected wood is rare and expensive to harvest, so oud in modern perfumery is almost always built from a blend of natural oud oil and synthetic oud-accord materials tuned to read as oud without needing the real resin in commercial volume, though none of the houses in this set publish a full formula breakdown to confirm that ingredient by ingredient.

The four vials here show the range. Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud keeps things sweet: saffron, rose and praline alongside oud, the value entry in the flight. Montale Black Aoud pairs oud with rose and patchouli, the combination the house built its name on. Montale Oud Tobacco leans warmer, with cumin, incense and cured tobacco pushing the oud toward smoky rather than sweet. Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade sits at the top of the flight: incense, birch, raspberry and saffron around a resinous oud core, the most expensive of the four.
