The Scent

Opens with black currant and pear, sweet and a little tart, then moves into iris, jasmine, and orange blossom. The base is where it does its real work: praline, vanilla, patchouli, and tonka bean, giving it that instantly recognizable candied-almond warmth. Sweet and powdery rather than fresh -- a gourmand built for fall and winter.

Worth Knowing

"La Vie Est Belle" translates from French as "Life Is Beautiful." It was built around iris and praline together, treating the traditionally cool, powdery iris note as a gourmand ingredient instead, and it was created by three perfumers working as a team -- Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion, and Anne Flipo -- rather than the usual single nose. Julia Roberts has fronted the fragrance's advertising campaigns since launch.

Released in 2012, La Vie Est Belle became one of Lancôme's best-selling fragrances and a modern feminine benchmark, spawning several flankers including L'Éclat, Intensément, Soleil Cristal, and L'Extrait.
