The Scent
Not a Perfume is built from a single ingredient, Cetalox, functioning as top, heart, and base all at once. On skin it reads as a soft, warm, ambery-musky-woody blend with a faint mineral sweetness, designed to melt into the wearer's own skin chemistry rather than sit as a distinct “perfume” smell. Projection is a genuine wildcard: some wearers report it reading bare-skin-close within minutes, while others (including a documented subset who are simply anosmic to ambroxan-type molecules) report smelling little to nothing, even as people nearby comment on it. Best understood as an effortless, invisible layer rather than a conventional statement scent. That's the whole point, and the whole selling point.
Worth Knowing
Juliette Has A Gun’s own copy calls it “a molecular composition made of a single ingredient,” and Fragrantica’s note listing backs that up: no top notes, no heart notes, just Cetalox. That's one of the rare cases in fragrance marketing where the minimalist claim is literally true rather than exaggerated. Not to be confused with Not a Perfume Superdose (2019), a stronger 20% flanker of the same concept.
Where It Came From
Released in 2010, it became the brand's signature minimalist flagship. Juliette Has A Gun was founded by Romano Ricci, great-grandson of Nina Ricci, who launched the house in Paris and Grasse in December 2006 after training in perfumery for seven years.
About Juliette Has A Gun
Juliette Has A Gun was founded in 2006 by Romano Ricci, positioned from the start against what he called the “highly codified” world of traditional niche perfumery. Not a Perfume (2010) became the house’s best-known minimalist statement.
