EDP vs Parfum vs Extrait: What Concentration Should You Actually Buy?

Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, parfum, extrait. It reads like a strength scale, and roughly it is: each step up usually means more fragrance oil in the bottle. The catch is that houses use these labels as marketing names about as often as measurements. We hand-decant in Regina, and the five bottles below, all from our own shelf, cover EDP, parfum, and extrait between them. Here's how to read the labels, with those five as the evidence.

What the letters usually mean

The shorthand everyone uses: eau de toilette sits around 5 to 15 percent fragrance oil, eau de parfum around 15 to 20, and parfum or extrait de parfum anywhere from 20 up to about 40. The rest is mostly alcohol. Treat those ranges as habits, not rules. Nothing in Canadian regulation fixes what an EDP has to contain, and the industry never agreed on a binding standard either, so every house draws its own lines and names its own tiers.

And parfum versus extrait de parfum? Same tier, two names. "Extrait" is just the French-derived word for the top concentration. Some houses print one, some print the other, and some invent a word of their own.

The name on the bottle is marketing first

Two examples off our own shelf. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir sounds like it should be an extrait. It isn't. We file it under parfum, and that's the right way to read it: a parfum-strength Le Male, dense with honey, tonka, and tobacco, praised for exceptional projection. "Elixir" is a name Gaultier picked. Not a tier.

Valentino pulled the same move with "Extradose." Born in Roma Donna Extradose is sold as Extradose Le Parfum, and per our own product notes, Extradose is Valentino's word for the amped-up concentration: more vanilla, more projection, more staying power. Invented word on the box. Parfum underneath.

A higher concentration is a different scent, not a louder one

Houses rarely take a formula and just add oil. They rework it. Born in Roma Donna EDP is built around its jasmine heart, three jasmine materials layered over bourbon vanilla, with a tart blackcurrant opening. The Extradose keeps the blackcurrant and the vanilla and pulls that jasmine out entirely, swapping in a boozy rum accord and pushing the sweetness up. Louder and longer, sure, reviewers commonly report a full workday of wear. But if the jasmine is what you love, the Extradose takes it away.

Gaultier's pair splits the same way. Le Male Le Parfum, an EDP despite the name on the box, is the smooth one: cardamom over creamy vanilla, polished, easy to wear. Le Male Elixir is the parfum, and the dense one. Its lavender and mint open with real bite, then honey, tonka, and tobacco turn it sweet, warm, and a little animalic. That step from EDP to parfum is a rebuild, not a louder pour. What actually separates them is composition, not a number on a label.

Extrait doesn't mean heavy, and it doesn't mean expensive

Al Haramain Amber Oud Aqua Dubai is an extrait de parfum. It's also the lightest scent on this page. Bright aquatic citrus, a watery melon-and-pineapple middle, soft musk under it, built for spring, summer, and easy daily wear. How to pick

Buy the scent. Let the concentration settle ties. When a house sells the same fragrance in two concentrations, read the notes before the label, because the step up usually changes the formula, and you want the version whose notes end up on your skin.
