About Dior
Christian Dior founded his couture house in Paris in 1946. He showed his first collection, later nicknamed the New Look, in February 1947, and Parfums Christian Dior launched that same year with Miss Dior, named for Dior's sister Catherine. Dior died in 1957; the house continued and today sits inside LVMH. J'adore arrived decades later, in 1999, and became the house's flagship modern fragrance for women. The Sauvage line started in 2015 with an Eau de Toilette we don't carry; the three concentrations we do stock, Eau de Parfum, Elixir, and the new Extrait, all followed it.

J'adore: the flagship women's floral since 1999
J'adore opens on pear and melon over bergamot and magnolia, a fruity, bright burst that leads into a dense white-floral heart of jasmine, rose, lily-of-the-valley, tuberose, and freesia, and dries down to a soft musk, vanilla, and cedar base with a blackberry facet running through it. Composed by Calice Becker and released in 1999 in a teardrop bottle designed by Herve Van der Straeten, it's been Dior's flagship women's fragrance for over 25 years and has since spawned its own family, including J'adore l'Or and J'adore Infinissime. Some reviewers of recent-batch bottles note it performs a little lighter than older formulations, a common complaint for long-running fragrances. Polished and radiant rather than sweet, with moderate to long longevity, a glossy designer floral built to be worn constantly rather than saved for one mood.
Sauvage Eau de Parfum: warmer and rounder than the original
Sauvage Eau de Parfum opens on bergamot, fills out with Sichuan pepper, lavender, star anise, and nutmeg, and settles into ambroxan and vanilla. Perfumer Francois Demachy built it as a reinterpretation of the 2015 original Eau de Toilette rather than a simple flanker, keeping the ambroxan spine and adding vanilla underneath it. Against the original it trades some metallic, sharp freshness for sweetness and weight, the version most people move to once the Eau de Toilette starts feeling thin, and the one that performs best in cold weather. Launched in 2018.
Sauvage Elixir: the dense, enthusiast favorite
Sauvage Elixir opens on nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom over a flash of grapefruit, moves through lavender, and settles into licorice, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, and Haitian vetiver. Launched in 2021 at parfum-strength concentration, it projects hard and lasts, and it reads far less like the original Sauvage than the Eau de Parfum does. Licorice is what most people notice first and either love or reject outright, worth trying in a 2ml before you commit to a full bottle for exactly that reason. If the Eau de Toilette is the office bottle, this is the one for cold nights.
Sauvage Extrait: the 2026 oud version, and Francis Kurkdjian's first Sauvage
Sauvage Extrait opens on ambroxan, lavender, and bergamot in a way that's recognisably Sauvage, then a Vietnamese oud heart takes over, and the base runs on patchouli, vetiver, and two cedars, Virginia and Atlas. It's drier and woodier than the Elixir and much darker than the Eau de Parfum, the first Sauvage built around oud. Francis Kurkdjian took over as Dior's perfume creation director, and this is a Sauvage composed in his hands rather than predecessor Francois Demachy's, which is the interesting part. It launched in 2026, brand new enough that community reviews are still thin, so treat the closeness read here as an early look rather than a settled verdict.
Which one to start with
J'adore is the only Dior women's fragrance we carry, so if you're after that lane it's the obvious start. Inside the Sauvage line, the Eau de Parfum is the default, most versatile pick, closest to what people mean when they say "Sauvage" and the safest first buy. Move to the Elixir if you already like Sauvage and want more weight for cold-weather evenings, as long as you're fine with licorice. The Extrait is for anyone who's written the line off as too mainstream and wants to see what an oud-forward Sauvage from Dior's new perfumer actually smells like, with the caveat that it's the newest and least reviewed of the three.
