The Scent
Lavender and lavender extract open bright and sharp, backed by lavandin and African rosemary in Tom Ford's own listed opening. The heart turns green and herbal, rosemary, mint, and basil layered with geranium and oakmoss, the "leather-like" contrast Tom Ford's own copy calls out. It dries down to a warm patchouli-and-amber base. Reviewers describe it as a modern, sharp-edged fougère with a soapy, shaving-cream-adjacent finish, the kind of scent the "barbershop fougère" label gets used for constantly. It wears comfortably across most of the year, only easing off as a pick in peak summer heat. Commonly cited longevity runs 7-12 hours with moderate-to-strong initial projection that settles into a closer trail.
Worth Knowing
This bottle is the 2020 Signature Collection eau de parfum, a repackaged relaunch of the 2019 Private Blend original, not identical juice in new glass. Reviewers who've worn both describe the Signature version as brighter, sharper, and a touch thinner than the Private Blend's deeper, more rounded patchouli-amber drydown. Same nominal notes, same perfumer, a real shift in how it wears. The closest widely cited comparison is Davidoff's 1986 classic Zino: fragrance community discussion describes perfumer Antoine Maisondieu building Beau de Jour out of an attempt to rework it, though that account traces to community retelling rather than a citable interview. Zino itself runs rougher and more tobacco-dusty, with patchouli pushed forward and lavender pulled back, but it's the nearest budget-adjacent option, at a fraction of the price.
Where It Came From
Beau de Jour launched in 2019 as part of Tom Ford's Private Blend collection, the brand's more exclusive line. It moved into the Signature Collection in January 2020, repackaged into the frosted-glass flacon shared with Métallique and Ombré Leather and sold at the wider Signature price tier through mainstream retailers. Perfumer Antoine Maisondieu, also credited for Armani Code, developed both versions.
About Tom Ford
Tom Ford launched his eponymous brand in 2005, partnering with the Estée Lauder Companies to develop its fragrance and beauty side as Tom Ford Beauty. Private Blend, launched in 2007, is the brand's more exclusive, niche-positioned collection; Signature is the wider mass-retail line sold at Sephora, Nordstrom, and department stores. Beau de Jour made the unusual jump from Private Blend into Signature.
