What makes a fragrance work for date night

Sweetness, spice and amber bases tend to carry further than citrus or aquatic ones, which is a large part of why they show up so often in fragrances marketed for evening wear. Four of the five vials in this set lean into that directly: Tom Ford Black Orchid pairs dark chocolate and black truffle with jasmine and patchouli, Carolina Herrera Good Girl builds almond and cacao under tuberose and orange blossom, Initio Narcotic Delight runs cherry and cognac over tobacco and tonka bean, and Mancera Aoud Café puts coffee and black currant over an amber base. YSL La Nuit de L'Homme is the quieter fifth vial, a cardamom-and-vetiver aromatic that trades projection for a more restrained, still-recognizable evening register.
