Shelf life: how long the fragrance stays good
Fragrance doesn't have a hard expiration date the way food does, but it does change over time, especially once a bottle has been opened and is getting exposed to air. Most fragrances stay in good shape for roughly one to three years after opening if you store them reasonably well. Some heavier, resin based scents can hold up even longer. Lighter, citrus forward fragrances tend to fade and turn faster because the top note ingredients are more delicate.
What actually breaks a fragrance down is a combination of heat, light, and repeated air exposure, not time on its own. A bottle sitting in a cool, dark drawer for two years will usually smell better than one that sat on a sunny windowsill for two months.
You'll know a fragrance has turned if it smells sharp, sour, or noticeably different from how it opened: a bit like rubbing alcohol gone flat, or a muddier version of the original scent. Trust your nose. If something smells off compared to how it smelled fresh, it probably is.
Storage tips that actually matter
- Keep it cool. Room temperature is fine. A hot car, a sunny windowsill, or a steamy bathroom shelf is not.
- Keep it dark. UV light breaks down fragrance compounds over time. A drawer or a closed cabinet beats an open shelf in direct sun.
- Keep it capped. Every time a bottle is left open, more of the alcohol carrier evaporates and more air gets in. Spray it, cap it, put it away.
- Minimize temperature swings. Moving a bottle repeatedly from a cold car to a warm house speeds up degradation more than steady room temperature does.
- Store it upright. Keeps the fragrance away from the sprayer mechanism and reduces the surface area exposed to air inside the bottle.
The bathroom is one of the worst places to store fragrance, despite being the most common. Heat and humidity from showers do real damage over time. A bedroom drawer or closet is a better home for a decant than the counter next to the sink.
How many wears you actually get
This depends on your atomizer and how heavy handed you are with the sprayer, but here's a reasonable estimate. Most fine mist atomizers put out somewhere around 0.05 to 0.1ml per spray, which works out to roughly 10 to 20 sprays per ml depending on the sprayer.
Using that range:
- 2ml: roughly 20 to 40 sprays total. At 3 to 4 sprays per wear, that's about 5 to 10 wears.
- 5ml: roughly 50 to 100 sprays total. At 3 to 4 sprays per wear, that's about 12 to 25 wears.
Those numbers move around based on the specific atomizer and how much product you like to put on, but it gives you a realistic ballpark instead of a marketing number.
